Osama bin Laden dead: George W Bush declines Barack Obama ground zero invitation
George W Bush has declined an invitation from Barack Obama to attend ground zero in the wake of the death of Osama bin Laden.
Mr Obama plans to visit the site of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack on Thursday in the aftermath of a US Navy SEALS raid in Pakistan that killed the al-Qaeda leader. The terrorist attack, which killed about 3,000 people, occurred in the early months of Mr Bush's presidency.
Mr Bush began the campaign to hunt down bin Laden after the Sept. 11 attacks on New York and Washington but was unable to do so during his time in office.
David Sherzer, his spokesman, has said that the former president appreciated the offer to attend but has chosen to remain out of the spotlight during his post-presidency. Mr Bush has kept a very low profile since leaving office in January 2009, save for releasing his book Decision Points, last year.
Mr Sherzer said Mr Bush had celebrated bin Laden's death as an "important victory in the war on terror."
